Presidential Spokesman Fadjroel Rachman explained about bipang which President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called a regional specialty that can be ordered online during Eid.

He conveyed the explanation through a tweet via his personal Twitter account @fadjroeL. In addition to the written description, he also uploaded a screenshot of bipang that was sold online at an e-commerce site

This is BIPANG or JIPANG from rice. My favorite food since childhood until now. BIPANG or JIPANG from rice is indeed a hit food until now. Thank you,” wrote Fadjroel.

Previously, Jokowi invited the public to shop for culinary online for those who cannot go home because of the corona virus pandemic. He then gave an example of a number of regional specialties

“Because the government is still in a pandemic atmosphere, the government prohibits homecoming tradition and for ladies and gentleman who missed regional cuisine or culinary specialties or who usually come home with souvenirs, they can order them online,” Jokowi said in a video shared on social media.

“Those who miss eating Gudeg Jogja, Bandeng Semarang, Empek empek Palembang, Bipang Ambawang Kalimantan and others, just order and your favorite food will arrive at home,” Jokowi added.

Bipang itself can refer to the term roast pork which is a typical culinary of Ambawang Pontianak, West Kalimantan. This dish is prepared by roasting young pork until tender with traditional spices in it.

Jokowi’s statement about Bipang went viral on social media and received mixed responses from netizens. Some of them highlight pork as one of the foods that are forbidden for Muslims but is exemplified as a culinary that can be bought during Eid.

Jokowi’s remarks even entered the national trending topic on Saturday (8/5). As of 12.50 WIB, there were at least 17,500 tweets containing the word ‘bipang’ which the President called. (adp/sfr)
